A PTFE-lined bellows expansion joint is a crucial component in piping systems, particularly in industries where highly corrosive or chemically aggressive media are handled. It combines the flexibility of a bellows (often metal or rubber) with the exceptional chemical resistance of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), also known as Teflon.
At its core, a PTFE-lined bellows expansion joint consists of an outer bellows structure (typically made of stainless steel) with a seamless, formed PTFE liner on the inside. This liner protects the primary bellows material from direct contact with the process fluid.
The bellows itself is designed with convolutions (folds) that allow it to absorb various types of movement in a pipeline:
Nominal Diameter (mm) | Wave number | Pressure level | Effective area of bellows | Maximum outer diameter dimension | Length |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
32 | 8 | 25/21 | 22/26 | 20/26 | 18/63 |
32 | 16 | 50/11 | 46/14 | 41/14 | 36/32 |
40 | 8 | 25/28 | 22/44 | 20/44 | 18/89 |
The combination of bellows flexibility and PTFE's properties offers significant advantages:
PTFE-lined bellows expansion joints are widely used in industries where chemical resistance, temperature stability, and flexibility are paramount:
